Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis and Screening (PGD/ PGS) in Iran
Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD) and Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS) are both analyses applied to decrease the chances of defected DNA transfer to the child. This analysis, in fact, differentiates embryos with a genetic defect from those that are genetically normal. Consequently, the risk of genetic abnormalities is reduced drastically. Evidently, if an embryo is defective, it will be eliminated from the further process and the most viable embryos will be selected.
Who is PGD/PGS offered to?
PDG/PGS generally can help all couples to have peace of mind for a healthy pregnancy. However, this testing is mainly intended for couples who suffer from a chronic genetic anomaly like Duchene muscular dystrophy, Huntington's disease, hemophilia, etc. The couples who already have had miscarriages can also benefit from this analysis. Normally PGD technique is suggested and applied to help with a smooth IVF (in vitro fertilization). PGD and PGS can also be used for gender selection.
On day 3 or 5 of embryonic development, a sample or biopsy will be taken from the embryos in order to gain a few cells, which will be going to be used for the diagnosis.
The collected cells are then sent and analyzed in the laboratory. The analysis and diagnosis might be applied in a genetics or cytogenetics laboratory. Subsequently, the diagnosis is made on each of the embryos. Eventually, healthy embryos will be ready to be transferred to the woman’s uterus (the IVF process) or can be kept for later use.
