The practice of hysteroscopy in Iran

Diagnostic hysteroscopy

A diagnostic examination is performed in case of uterine bleeding, after an infertility assessment, or repeated miscarriages. It allows the surgeon to look at the normality of the uterine cavity. This procedure, therefore, can have a vital effect on the overall success of an IVF (In vitro fertilization) cycle. Normally the surgeon would prescribe a diagnostic hysteroscopy before an IVF is applied so that the potential risks can be minimized.

In the case of a diagnostic test, the patient would be placed on a gynecology table and the hysteroscopy begins with vaginal disinfection. A speculum is then introduced and a clamp is placed on the cervix. The physiological serum is injected continuously through the cervix to allow swelling of the uterine cavity; with the purpose of better visibility.

Operative hysteroscopy

During operative hysteroscopy, the hysteroscopy can be equipped with small instruments which also allow working in the cavity, under visual control, for example, the surgeon uses an electric scalpel or other surgical instruments for this, and always using natural means. Therefore, during operative hysteroscopy, the surgeon can treat fibroid, polyps, adhesions (synechiae), the endometrium, or even mucosal abnormalities.

In the event of an operative examination, general or loco regional anesthesia is required. It is performed in the operating room, on a fasting patient. An outpatient hospitalization is usually sufficient.
