What is Ethnic Nose?

What type of ethnic noses do you have? Do you want to have the perfect facial shape? Did you know that your ethnicity has a great role in how your nose is shaped? If your mind is also filled with such problems, you have come to the right place.

Well, believe it or not, the phrase “ethnic noses” is a real thing! And it affects every decision you make, from surgery to other cosmetic procedures, to change your facial shape.

In the following, we will go through different nose shapes and how ethnicity can influence the way you look. We also tell you about ethnic rhinoplasty and what you should consider before undergoing a procedure. Keep reading!

What are ethnic noses?

As you may have noticed, each race or group of people that live in a specific region of this planet share the same physical characteristics. For example, you can almost always recognize an Asian by looking at their unique Monolid eyes.

So, each race shares the same genetics that their ancestors passed on to them. Although their facial characteristics have evolved over time, the main features remain the same. But it’s not just a matter of genetics, the climate, environment, or even gender have a significant role in how each person looks.

Our ancestors’ physical features evolved and changed the way it is in order to survive a specific climate. That’s why people in cold regions have small ethnic noses, whereas in hot regions the nose size tends to be bigger.

What ethnicities have ethnic noses?

As you understood so far, not only each race has a specific type of ethnic nose, but you can also see many similarities between people living on the same continent. Of course, this only applies to regions of the continents that have the same environment and climate.

Now let’s look at ethnic noses’ characteristics of different races.

What type of noses do Asians have?

Well, if we want to categorize Asians, it would include all the people living in east and west Asia. The first thing you notice in them is their small and slim noses. Nevertheless, their skin is thicker than it seems, causing the tip and the bridge of their noses to seem wide and rounded.

The majority of Asians do not have protruded bridges, unlike many other races, letting them have a unique and recognizable type of ethnic nose. However, south Asians’ noses are a bit different in terms of nasal alar space, which is much larger than west Asians or some other races in general.

What is a Hispanic nose?

Hispanics or Latinos have thick and oily skins with broad bridge noses. The typical feature of Hispanic noses is a small hump. Usually, they have downwards tips making them seem flat and under-projected.

You can also see the same feature in Mexicans and other races that share the same ancestors.

What type of noses do Iranians have?

Iranians’ noses are a lot like Hispanics. Their typical characteristic is that they have thick and oily skins. On the other hand, the tip of their noses is droopy and the most noticeable thing is a hump on their bridge. But the only difference is that Iranians’ ethnic noses are a bit larger than Hispanics.

What about other races?

You can see many similarities between what we’ve explained and other races. Take the following as an example:

  • Europeans: wide noses with protruded and rounded tips are a sign of the European race. Nevertheless, they do not usually have humps and the tip of their noses are pointing up.
  • Americans: Americans are known to have ethnic noses with depressed roots. As a result, their noses seem slim and small.
  • Mediterranean: drooping tips with humpy bridges are the main feature of Mediterranean noses; who live in southern Europe to central Asia. Among those, Arab noses are much similar to African. Which many believe comes from the same ancestors.

What ethnicity has big noses?

As you may have seen, the widest ethnic noses belong to Africans. Although they have big nostrils and the tip of their noses are round, they also have flat and straight bridges. North Africans have smaller noses than their west peers. In general, since their skin is much thicker than other races, they need to care more in order to avoid scarring.

What is the perfect nose?

There are no criteria to determine a so-called perfect nose. But a written theory by two Academic Foundation doctors, Dr. Anni Ding and Dr. Yuanpei Zhang in an article named “What is the perfect nose? Lesson learnt from the literature” says: The ideal nose length (RT) is 0.67x midfacial height. A straight dorsum with no supratip break or a straight dorsum reduced to a level of 2 mm below the tip, creating a retroussé, are both desirable. In fact, there is no such thing. Every human being has its own special characteristics that make them unique. However, sometimes surgery can eliminate facial imperfections and make you more attractive. So, it’s totally a personal choice and depends on each person’s preference.

But if you decide to undergo nose surgery, you must first discuss your expectations with your doctor to see whether they are achievable or not. After that, the surgeon will evaluate your overall health so to set the best time for surgery. But remember to consider ethnic rhinoplasty when looking for a surgeon.

How is ethnic rhinoplasty different?

Ethnic rhinoplasty or nose job is a cosmetic procedure that people undergo to promote their facial appearance. The only difference between the usual nose job and rhinoplasty for ethnic noses is that in the second one, the doctor treats patients according to their unique facial characteristics.

It means that the surgeon must have expertise in understanding each unique type of nose and preserve the patient ethnic feature. In other words, the surgeon will adjust your nose in a way to complete other parts of your face.

Although each surgery needs a special approach to a patient’s need, the total procedure is the same. Ethnic nose job is divided into two approaches:

  1. Open (external)
  2. Closed (endonasal)

If you have minor problems, it’s better to choose a closed nose job. Endonasal, as the name indicates, leaves no scars on your face because all incisions stay hidden inside your nostrils.

At last, don’t forget that rhinoplasty is a life-changing procedure and therefore a professional surgeon must perform it. So, choose a board-certified cosmetic surgeon and check his/her other patient results and feedback to be sure of his/her capabilities.
