A complete guide to eye surgery in Iran

Eyes are the organs of the visual system. These organs allow organisms to receive and process visual details and respond, which does not necessarily require vision. The eye detects light and converts it into electrochemical messages in nerve cells.

What is eye surgery?

An ophthalmologist performs eye surgery to examine the eye or adnexa and perform surgery on them. As part of the eye's adnexa, including the eyebrow, eyelids, eyelashes, lacrimal gland, and drainage apparatus, eyebrows, eyelids, eyelashes, and lacrimal gland play an essential role in globe protection, lubrication, and minimizing ocular infection risk. An eye specialist would decide about proper surgery and appropriate surgical cure for each eye and related aftercare.

Many ancient books reference eye surgery and cataract surgery dating back to the 5th century BC. Eye surgery continues to be a vastly practiced surgery to this day, with different techniques developed to treat various eye problems.

Eye surgery in Iran

As you know, the importance of vision, eye, and ophthalmology is not hidden from anyone today. This science was significant among Iranians in the past. Since decades ago, Iran has been the center of eye care in the Middle East, thanks to its modern technology and facilities for ophthalmic treatments and skilled specialists. Iran is among the top 15 nations globally for scientific and technological advances in ophthalmology, and Eye surgery makes it one of the most developed countries in this field. Reputable ophthalmology centers with very advanced technology for eye treatment are in Iran. Experienced Iranian ophthalmologists visit and cure patients. CarefulTrip monitors the performance of ophthalmologists in clinics and hospitals to find the best for you.

Traveling to Iran for eye surgeries is very common these days. All these specialized surgeries are performed under the supervision of experienced ophthalmologists in Iran. The number of ophthalmology patients coming to Iran worldwide, especially from the Middle East, rapidly increases to receive eye care treatment in Iran. Many Iranian eye specialists are recognized internationally for their expertise and skill.

In most years, Iranian ophthalmology graduates take the top positions in the International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO) exams. Many modern eye clinics and hospitals are available in Iran. You can expect any eye care treatment in Iran, such as Eye LASIK, Phemto LASIK, PRK, and other eye surgeries. Compared to other countries, Iran's eye treatment is the most affordable. Iranian medical centers have attracted thousands of eye patients from neighboring countries to undergo eye surgery.

Eye Problems and Blindness

What is Blindness and its causes?

Blindness means lack of vision. The blind person cannot see. The literal meaning of the word "blindness" indicates the inability of a person to distinguish darkness from light in both eyes. The terms blind and blindness in the society have been modified to cover many vision disorders. Blindness is often used today to describe severe vision loss in one or both eyes with little retention of residual vision. Visual impairment or low vision means that vision does not improve even with glasses, contact lenses, medication, or surgery. Visual impairment can range from mild to severe.

What causes eye problems?

The eyes are one of the most vital organs in the body and, like any other organ, are prone to complications caused by genetic and environmental factors. Through these methods of care, you can minimize these factors and eye injuries.

There is a wide variety of eye diseases or disorders. Vision impairment and preventable blindness are caused by cataracts, glaucoma, and refractive errors. Often, eye disorders and diseases in the elderly are minor and go away on their own or are easily treated. Other eye conditions, however, can be fatal and lead to blindness. In childhood, some symptoms may manifest, whereas, in later life, they may worsen. Eye care in Iran may be necessary if one of these symptoms worsens or becomes more severe.

Diseases and disorders of the eyes can produce various symptoms that impair vision. Some eye treatments require surgery and specialized treatments, The most common disease are as follows:

Glaucoma, Cataract (blurred or cloudy vision), Macular degeneration, Retinal detachment, Conjunctivitis (pink eye), Keratoconus, and eye refraction. They all have their own method of treatment

  • Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a term used to describe a group of eye disorders with different causes but a common clinical effect on the eye and optic nerve and associated with intraocular pressure.

This problem can damage the eye's vision, which is irreversible and can cause blindness if left untreated. This condition is triggered by a sudden increase in the pressure of the fluid or substance inside the eye. Glaucoma is asymptomatic, and the person will not be aware of it for the rest of their life. It is possible to slow down or stop the progression of glaucoma with eye drops, eye laser, or eye surgery in Iran. Therefore, early detection is critical. When the following symptoms are present in a person, there is a possibility of chronic glaucoma. Symptoms include constant changes in the lens score of the glasses, mild headaches or blurred vision disorders, or the inability to adjust vision from light to dark.

  • Cataract

A cataract is an eye disease with various causes, starting with blurred vision and impaired vision as the lens becomes dimmer and dimmer. Fortunately, cataract eye disease is most often cured with delicate eye surgery in Iran. If you have a routine eye exam, your doctor can detect a cataract. The main treatment options are surgical removal of cataracts, eyeglasses, and magnifying lenses. An artificial lens is placed over the cloudy one during surgery, which is curative.

Aging is the most common cause of Cataracts. Trauma, radiation, diabetes, and birth presence are other reasons. Low vision caused by cataracts causes many problems for patients. For example, terrible driving, reading, face recognition, falling, and depression caused by poor vision. Types of Cataracts are different by their types. People with sclerotic nuclear cataracts often notice a reduction in vision. Diplopia, Blurred vision (which usually occurs in bright light. This usually happens for the first time at night when you see the light of cars in the form of a halo) are the common complications of this disease. Compared to other countries, Cataract surgery in Iran could be regarded as one of the most affordable operations.

  • Macular degeneration AMD or ARMD

In the elderly, Macular degeneration AMD or ARMD is the most common cause of blindness. It has no symptoms in the earliest stage. the result is blurred or no vision. In this disease, the macula is destroyed. Direct and clear vision is provided by the macula, the light-sensitive region of the retina. Macular is necessary for precise tasks such as reading and driving. Various types of macular degeneration exist, including dry and wet. The dry type is more common, and about 90% of patients get this type. The wet type is usually associated with a more severe and severe vision loss.

People over 65 are more likely to suffer from macular degeneration, and women are more likely to get the disease. Most cases of this disease occur with age. This disease can also be a side effect of some medications. The disease may also be influenced by hereditary factors.

A growing number of abnormal blood vessels behind the retina leak blood and fluid, which results in vision loss, which may occur very quickly in wet macular degeneration. The retina's light-sensitive cells slowly die away in dry macular degeneration, causing deterioration of central vision over time.

AMD treatment depends on the stage of the disease when it is diagnosed. These treatments are generally aimed at slowing down the disease's progression. Vitamin and mineral supplementation, Adaptive devices, laser coagulation therapy for macular degeneration have been suggested by ophthalmologists.

  •  Retinal detachment

This complication can be seen in all ages and both sexes. Retinal detachment is an emergency eye surgical situation. Detachment of the retina (light-receiving tissue behind the eye) from other eye tissues. What separates the retina from the back of the eye is the accumulation of fluid behind the retina. When the retina is detached, its function is disrupted, resulting in blurred vision; it occurs in 7% of cases for both eyes. Retinal detachment is a serious problem because it can lead to blindness in almost all cases if left untreated.

  •  Conjunctivitis (pink eye)

The most apparent sign of conjunctivitis is redness of the eyes due to inflammation. Symptoms of conjunctivitis can be summarized as follows:

Allergic conjunctivitis: Involves both eyes and causes itching and redness along with tearing and swelling of the eyelids. The patient may also have a runny nose due to sensitivity.

Viral conjunctivitis: usually begins with the involvement of one eye and may continue to affect the other eye. Other symptoms include severe tearing, watery discharge, and redness of the eyes.

  • Bacterial (microbial) conjunctivitis:

Involves both eyes and causes a thick discharge that may cause the eyelids to stick together, especially when waking up. Other symptoms include swelling of the conjunctiva, redness, and tearing. This type of conjunctivitis usually affects one eye at first but is easily transmitted to the other eye.

  •  Keratoconus

Keratoconus is a progressive disease usually occurs in adolescence or the early third decade of life. In this disease, the cornea becomes thinner and changes its shape. The cornea is naturally round or spherical, but in the keratoconus, the cornea protrudes and forms a cone. This disease affects the refraction of light when entering the eye and reduces visual acuity. Thinning and changing the shape of the cornea from spherical to conical leads to myopia - irregular astigmatism and thus reduced vision.

As a progressive disease, keratoconus usually appears during puberty, progresses to the third and fourth decades, and stops. This change affects the refraction of light when it enters the eye and reduces visual acuity. Keratoconus may occur in one or both eyes, but it is seen in 90% of cases in both eyes. Keratoconus is a relatively common disease in all races and both sexes. There is a family history in 6 to 10% of patients. The cause of keratoconus is not yet known. Although the disease is not inherited, genetics, the environment, or certain diseases may play a role. Keratoconus can develop as a result of chronic abnormal eye rubbing. Rubbing is not ineffective in the process of causing it, so patients with keratoconus are advised to avoid rubbing the eye. At first, it is tried to control the disease by prescribing glasses, but if the glasses are not satisfactory for the patient, they can use the lens.

Different methods are used to treat this disease, such as Hybrid lenses, Scleral lenses, Piggybacking. If the lenses cannot help the patient, surgery to repair the keratoconus is performed by a specialist.

Corneal transplantation or penetrating keratoplasty is necessary for approximately 11% to 27% of patients with keratoconus. Contact lens wear can cause increased corneal thinning or scarring. Penetration keratoplasty is most performed for keratoconus, accounting for around one-quarter of these procedures. The recovery needs six weeks after surgery. Surgical operations include Epikeratophakia, Corneal ring implants, Cross-linking, Radial keratotomy.

Corneal transplantation in Iran is the final surgical decision by the specialist. This procedure is done according to the doctor's opinion. It is usually recommended if the patient does not get results from any other methods and is more suitable for people whose cornea is turbid.

  •  Refractive surgery In Iran

In the 1950s, when lenses were not yet famous, glasses were the only practical way to correct refractive eye diseases for at least seven consecutive centuries. Refractive eye surgery reduces or eliminates the dependency on glasses or contact lenses by improving the eye's refractive state. The most common method of reshaping the cornea is with Excimer laser or Phemto second laser. It encompasses a variety of procedures for surgically remodeling the cornea (keratomileusis), implanting lenses, or replacing lenses.

There are currently several modern methods of eye correction surgery that include:

  • LASIK :which is now replaced by Phemto-LASIK. Phemto-LASIK is done by both Excimer and Phemto second laser.
  • LASEK (PRK) : PRK is done by Excimer laser.
  • Phemto-SMILE (ReLEx SMILE): Phemto-SMILE is done by Phemto second laser.

The purpose of laser eye surgery in Iran is to correct a person's vision to no longer need glasses or contact lenses.

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is the first laser eye correction method to remove corneal contraction directly from the eye's surface. PRK is also known as surface degradation and was performed outside the United States during the 1980s. PRK was also approved by the FDA in 1995 and is still used today, but LASIK is the most popular laser surgery today. Because PRK is a simple procedure, there is no risk of surgical flap complications. A corneal ablation procedure, such as LASEK or PRK, permanently changes a person's corneal shape by ablating (vaporizing) a small amount of stroma tissue just beneath the corneal epithelium on the front of the eye. Ablation begins with the removal of the outer layer of the cornea.

There is a significant difference in PRK eye surgery costs between Iran and other countries.

Recent technological advances have led eye surgeons to create thinner flaps better, meaning that people with thin corneas may already be candidates for LASIK. However, suppose you have a thin cornea with myopia. In that case, it is necessary to change the eye's shape and consider other vision correction methods with built-in waves analysis that can detect visual errors and adjust them automatically. The main advantage of LASIK over PRK is that you will feel minor discomfort immediately after the operation, and your vision will usually return to normal within a few hours instead of a few days. Several types of LASIK surgery depend on how the flap is made:

-LASEK involves creating an ultra-thin flap in the outer covering of the eye epithelium and floating it on the surface of the eye with alcohol to alter vision.

 - EPI-LASIK is the same as LASIK, except that a unique cutting tool is used to remove the flap.

There is a difference between LASEK and PRK. The PRK and LASEK procedures interact with the epithelium on top of the cornea. Still, the PRK procedure eliminates it, whereas LASEK removes it for the procedure before the material is returned for healing after laser surgery. By removing the flap created during the procedure, LASEK avoids complications associated with LASIK. It may also reduce the likelihood of dry eye symptoms following the surgery. LASIK does not impose any restrictions, and patients can continue their sports activities as before.

LASIK is best performed as your eyes develop when your prescription is unlikely to change, and your eyes are well-developed. LASIK is generally performed on individuals between the ages of 20 and 40.

Iran is considered a top-notch LASIK center in the Middle East regarding its skilled specialists and surgeons. More than 40,000 Iranian and foreign patients undergo LASIK in Iran each month. The cleanliness and professionalism of Iranian clinics and hospitals are also exceptional. Iranian eye hospitals are equipped with the latest medical technologies in developed countries. Among the top reasons for choosing Iran as the site for this eye treatment is the low cost of all eye surgery compared to clinics in other countries.

Reconstructive eye surgery in Iran

  •  Blepharoplasty

Another surgery performed by eye specialists is a reconstructive surgery called blepharoplasty. An eyelid surgery procedure is called blepharoplasty. As you age, you lose muscle strength in the muscles that support your eyelids. Blepharoplasty is a type of surgery that repairs droopy eyelids. It may involve removing excess skin, muscle, and fat is a plastic surgery used to fix eyelids' defects, deformities, and disfigurements and aesthetically change the eye region.

  •  Iris Implant

The iris implant is often considered a 'life-changing' experience. Iris implant in Iran is used to correct or change the eye color with any color you want. CarefulTrip in collaboration with Noor Hospital is the only place in Iran that perform artificial iris surgery to change the eye color.

  •  Ocular prosthesis (artificial eye, or glass eye)

An artificial eye or eye prosthesis is a type of artificial organ that replaces a damaged natural eye following eye drainage, partial eye drainage, or complete drainage of the eye and eyelids. The prosthesis is placed on the eye implant and under the eyelids. Although formerly referred to as a glass eye, the eye prosthesis takes on an almost convex shell shape and is made of medical acrylic plastic. In general, it is impossible to distinguish an artificial eye from a healthy eye if the artificial eye is made according to scientific principles and the patient's eyelids do not have any defects or abnormalities, including drooping or rupture, and the eye socket is healthy.

Which surgical procedure is suitable for you?

Suppose you have a genetic eye disease or need vision correction by experienced specialists.
